Goals for the year

I'm feeling pretty ambitious this year. January is the season for setting high goals for yourself. Most people set goals of losing weight and being a better person, and I mean I plan to do that, but I wanted to share with you all my creative goals.

My goals can be boiled down to three things. Get better at writing, Consistently produce, and solidify a business plan.

1) Get Good At Writing

I don't have any trouble organizing my thoughts. What I have trouble with is the raw mechanics of writing. I can form sentences, but editing is where I need to grow. Not just in comic writing, but in writing anything. So I've set myself a lofty goal for writing output.

  1. I want to be able to write to tight deadlines, so I aim to write 52 blog posts in 2023. That's a post a week. (Hey I'm doing fine so far) These can range from project updates to comic reviews, so I'm cutting myself a little bit of slack. The idea is to draft one day, edit another day, then grammar check and post the last day.

  2. Next I want to complete a storyline in my comic by the end of the year. My writing method for this will be a little less crammed. Sort of. I'll take a month to draft and edit 9(ish) pages, and then spend the next two months drawing them. With this I hope to give myself enough time to create some really cohesive and enjoyable pages.

2) Consistent Uploads

Consistency over intensity makes greater impact. Wise words someone gave me about personal growth.

  1. 3 pages a month. Like I said I'll alternate between writing and drawing. If I can get a good rhythm I think I can average 3 comic pages a month.

  2. 1 piece of art a month. No I will prioritize the comic, I don't want to get burnt out on drawing the same characters, so I plan to try and do art for fun regularly. The important thing is that I'm maintaining my skills at drawing, so if I don't perfectly meet this I'm fine with that.

3)Solidify Business Plan

The dream is to produce comics and art full time. I know that's a long way off, but I think there are some steps I can be making to prepare for success.

  1. Find my tribe. I don't just need to find people who'll enjoy my comics, I want to find a community. Since twitter imploded I'll be exploring other outlets to share my work. I hope to find like minded artists and comics creators. If I don't find a community I'll just have to make my own.

  2. Explore passive income options. There's a lot of ways to monetize creativity so I aim to figure out what would work best for me. Right now I'm experimenting with RedBubble as well as listing original art on ebay. Nether are particularly profitable. I have to remember not to let this eat up time from actually creating.

  3. Coloring book (I mean an art book). If I keep up the art making throughout the year I'll have a lot of pieces. I'd like to compile them into a printable PDF for people to enjoy. Do people still enjoy adult coloring books?

So that's my plan as of January 1st. It sin't perfect and I'm sure it will change throughout the year. I think It'll be most important to prioritize writing. Art won't be hard to make happen, but I will have to keep an eye on myself when it comes to the business side of things.
